This week on Journey to June, I spoke to a fellow member of The Post, Madison Gates. Madison grew up a goalkeeper, played for the U.S. youth national team and at the University of Michigan, and now leads marketing as VP at i9 Sports.
In this conversation, we talk about what happens when an identity built on earning your place follows you into the boardroom, and what it took for her to stop hiding the athlete in her. Madison walks me through blowing out her knee at the peak of her recruiting, the teammates who rallied around her, and the stretch in corporate when she tucked her sports background away and felt herself drift. We also get into why she's so passionate about keeping kids playing, across more than one sport, without anyone needing to keep up with the Joneses.
If you've ever wondered who you are when no one is keeping score, I think this one will stay with you.
