BETHEL: DON’T LET TRADITION REPLACE THE WORD OF GOD | Worship God Alone | Capt. Rajesh Daniel
“Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours… No man shall be able to stand against you.” — Deuteronomy 11:24–25
Before Elisha received the double portion, his feet passed through four significant places:
GILGAL → BETHEL → JERICHO → JORDAN
In this message, Capt. Rajesh Daniel continues the journey through BETHEL with a serious warning:
DON’T ALLOW RELIGIOUS TRADITION TO REPLACE OBEDIENCE TO THE WORD OF GOD.
Bethel means “House of God.” It was the place where Jacob encountered God. Yet generations later, King Jeroboam established a golden calf at Bethel (1 Kings 12:28–29).
Think about it:
A PLACE KNOWN FOR AN ENCOUNTER WITH GOD LATER BECAME ASSOCIATED WITH FALSE WORSHIP.
Spiritual history alone cannot protect us if we depart from God's Word.
Exodus 20:4–5 warns against making an image for the purpose of bowing down to it or serving it. Jesus reaffirmed the fundamental direction of worship:
“You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.” — Matthew 4:10
Scripture repeatedly redirects worship away from created beings and toward God.
When John fell before an angel in Revelation 22, the angel stopped him:
“Do not do that… Worship God.”
When Cornelius fell at Peter's feet, Peter immediately raised him up:
“Stand up; I myself am also a man.” — Acts 10:26
Mary is honored in Scripture as “blessed among women.” Christians should never dishonor her. Yet Mary herself magnified the Lord and rejoiced in “God my Savior.”
And Jesus must never be placed in the category of angels, saints, or other created beings.
JESUS CHRIST IS LORD.
John 1:1 declares:
“The Word was God.”
Hebrews 1 distinguishes the Son from angels and speaks of angels worshipping Him.
Therefore, the biblical question is not simply:
“What has my family always practiced?”
or
“What does my religious tradition teach?”
The greater question is:
“WHAT DOES THE WORD OF GOD SAY?”
Jesus warned in Mark 7 about allowing human tradition to displace God's commandment.
Tradition itself is not automatically wrong. Many traditions can remind us of biblical truth.
BUT WHEN ANY TRADITION CONTRADICTS SCRIPTURE, GOD’S WORD MUST HAVE THE FINAL AUTHORITY.
Our eternal hope cannot rest upon an image, statue, medal, building, pastor, denomination, saint, angel, or family tradition.
OUR SALVATION IS IN JESUS CHRIST.
Acts 4:12 declares:
“Nor is there salvation in any other.”
And 1 Timothy 2:5 says:
“There is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.”
This message is not a call to insult, hate, or attack people from another Christian tradition. People are not our enemies. We are called to speak truth in love and examine our own beliefs and practices in the light of Scripture.
Before Elisha reached Jordan, he passed through Bethel.
Bethel reminds us:
DON’T JUST ASK IF IT IS AN OLD TRADITION.
DON’T JUST ASK IF IT IS POPULAR.
DON’T JUST ASK IF GENERATIONS HAVE PRACTICED IT.
Ask:
“IS IT ACCORDING TO THE WORD OF GOD?”
Let Scripture lead us.
Let Christ remain at the center.
And let our worship belong to God alone.
