Two games lose when played separately. Yet when they are alternated, they can begin to win. This chapter explores Parrondo’s paradox, a mathematical idea that challenges an apparently obvious intuition: if every strategy is bad, their combination should be bad as well. The key is that each move changes the state in which the next one occurs. Probabilities, sequences and state-dependent dynamics reveal how a combination can behave very differently from its individual parts. It is not a formula for beating the casino, but something stranger: sometimes what matters is not only each move, but the conditions it creates for the one that follows.
