Abstract: Employer demand for artificial intelligence (AI) skills is moving quickly from basic use toward hands-on building. Workday's October 2026 Global Workforce Report finds that requisition demand for simple prompting peaked in January 2026 and then fell 25%, while demand for building AI tools, automating workflows, and AI engineering rose 51% between September 2025 and July 2026. In the same report, 79% of workers say they know which skills they need, but only 66% say their employer helps them develop those skills. This article examines that mismatch: the shrinking shelf life of entry-level AI skills, the gap between employee awareness and employer support, and the consequences for performance and wellbeing. Drawing on field experiments, training-transfer research, and labor-market evidence, it proposes five evidence-based responses: skills-based capability mapping, funded and time-protected reskilling, learning by building, champion and manager networks, and outcome-aligned expectations. It closes with three pillars for durable AI capability.
