5,0 sur 5 étoilesA Love Letter to Maris Black

I listened to the Kage Trilogy over a weekend, binging on Maris Black's beautiful writing and J. F. Harding's amazing voice. Once I started listening to the first book, Kage, I was hooked. I quickly bought the next two books, Kage Unleashed and this book Kage Unmasked, and listened straight through. Maris Black has a gift for voicing the hearts and souls of young men falling in love. Her descriptions of college life and mixed martial arts are rich. While I have been to college I knew nothing of m/m/a but know I will pay attention to the sport from now on. I also will seek out more of her books. The scenes of violence, there are a few, fit in where she has placed them and add to the beauty of the story. Her sex scenes are scalding hot and I wonder where she did her research. The coming out scenes show the grace of two men who are star struck by the love they have found in each other. If you are a fan of a good old fashioned romance or a modern male/male romance this may just be the trilogy for you. This book, the first in the trilogy, has a gigantic cliffhanger.
Very real and likeable characters - except for when Jamie is behaving like a preppy brat. Like when Kage books them into a plush hotel and, rather than accepting the gesture as a compliment, Jamie gets into a snit because he thinks Kage is paying too much- even though he is not paying and Kage has a fortune at his disposal. I could have done without that aspect of Jamie. But, overall, the chemistry and dynamic between Kage and Jamie were electrifying. I liked that the story developed and progressed at a reasonable pace. They did not jump into an immediate relationship; plenty of time was allotted to enjoy the complexities of the two main characters and their growing relationship. The book ends on a definite cliffhanger - no HEA just yet.
I want to thank a fellow challenge member (Tennacious B) for picking this book for me, I think it would have been a while before I discovered it on my own. I haven't read anything else by [author:Maris Black|7222957] but that is sure to change now. This was such a promising start to the trilogy that I cannot wait to read the rest of it.
Jamie has to do a project for school so when he hears there's an MMA fight going on near him he has his teacher pull some strings to get him a press pass. Jamie watches fights with his roommate and knows that most fighters are roughed up pretty bad so he isn't really sure what Kage's story is because Michael Kage looks like he has never fought a day in his life.
Jamie and his girlfriend break-up right before he is hired to be an intern for Kage over summer break. With nothing else to do for his summer Jamie flies out to Sin City (Las Vegas) to meet with Kage and begin his internship. I can honestly say that Jamie is a bit naive when it comes to certain things regarding himself. One of the biggest is that he cannot believe that anyone is interested in him in a sexual way, I don't know why this is, but Jamie is very insecure.
This was a rollercoaster of a story that leaves you with one heck of a cliff hanger!
I loved loved loved loved this book. It was raw, gritty and sexy as hell. Gave me the feels and everything in between. I felt the emotions. The sex was spectacular. The writing even more so. The book was everything you would want in a M/M book. There's only 1 thing I could say that I felt lacked and that was the acceptance of the Jamie with being gay. It's like he didn't struggle that much with it. I kind of expected a bit more resistance than that but I still loved the book, except... don't hate me for this... but the price at $5.99+tax choked my pocketbook, especially for a book that's part of a trilogy. That means I'll be paying $20 by the time I finish this series. That is something I'm not thrilled about but I still love the book... and still broke down and purchased the 2nd one. But I did have to note that... because it's a deterrent for many readers.

Normally I review a book as soon as I finish it. I finished this book a few days ago, and immediately opened book two. My heart goes out to the folks who read this when it first came out and had to wait. I could not even IMAGINE having to wait. I could barely wait the 4 seconds it took to download.
The relationship between Kage and Jamie is a little Cinderella-ish. Jamie's not quite as poor and put upon as Cinderella and Kage is NOT anyone's Prince Charming (except Jamie's!) but that's the fairy tale that comes to mind after reading this.
Kage's life is very dark. Jamie blunders into it, really no other way to describe it. And it's instant, magnetic attraction. And oh my heavens, is it HAWT! These sex scenes are 'surface of the sun' scorching. Just. O. M. G.
I don't know how long it's going to be before I can get these guys out of my head. (Do I even want to?) Get the book!
