Reported speech is when we talk about what someone said in the past - and the verbs we use for it are called “reporting verbs” - ones like say, tell, ask, recommend, advise, warn, promise, and more.

But there are some important little details to remember about the sentence structure when using each of these reporting verbs, so a lot of English learners make mistakes with them. Today I’ll teach you 30 common reporting verbs and the correct ways to use them in a sentence.

I recommend downloading the PDF guide to this lesson so that you can review and remember all these reporting verbs and sentences - you can get it by clicking here: https://espressoenglish.lpages.co/free-pdf-30-reporting-verbs/

I’ve organized the reporting verbs into categories:

    • Most common reporting verbs

    • Reporting verbs for advice

    • Reporting verbs for arguments and strong feelings

    • Reporting verbs for statements

    • Other reporting verbs

Linking verbs do not describe an action – instead, they connect the subject of the sentence to a word describing it or providing additional information about it. For example:

    • - I feel tired. (“tired” describes me)
    • - He seems annoyed (“annoyed” describes him)
    • - She is a teacher. (“a teacher” describes her)
    • - They are students. (“students” describes them)

I’ll show you a list of linking verbs, and then we’ll look at a lot of examples. If you want to download this lesson to save it and review it later, click here and enter your e-mail address to get the free PDF.
