Going in with with no previous knowledge, this shook me to the core
I have spent some time in Shanghai as part of a Chinese language learning effort in my youth. I had no knowledge of the history and because no one talks about it , I never learned anything concrete about Chinese history during my time there.
This short and easy to understand account tells an interesting 3 sided story of facts , the spoken opinions and the and unspoken thoughts of the people who lived through the cultural revolution. I can guarantee that it will chill you to the bone how malleable children are and willing to part of a hierarchy when manipulated in the right way.
Then the spooky part, is how they deal with the things they did as adults.
Finally the terrifying part is how the Chinese population and especially the children are following a similar path of absolute hierarchy and loyalty and fealty to their current leader, who is clearly both a victim and a product of the cultural revolution.
My favourite quote - history doesn’t repeat but it rhymes.
